Random House wins at the PANZ Book Design Awards

The Great Wrong War published by Random House took out the Hachette New Zealand Award for Best Non-Illustrated Book last night at the PANZ Book Design Awards ceremony held at the National Library of New Zealand in Auckland.

Designed by Pieta Brenton the judges commented that the book had been “cleverly designed with a reductive approach, where graphic elements are minimised in favour of clean two-colour typography that is accompanied by inset images. The effect of this design is cohesiveness and readability.”

Brenton also won the Young Designer Award, with her portfolio consisting of three Random House books, Where Your Left Hand Rests: A Collection of Poems by Fiona Kidman, The Great Wrong War: New Zealand Society in WWI by Stevan Eldred-Grigg and Home Work: Leading New Zealand Architects’ Own Houses by John Walsh and Patrick Reynolds.

“Random House is delighted to have had so many books among the finalists at the 2011 PANZ Book design Awards,” says Publishing Director Nicola Legat.

“We are especially delighted that Pieta Brenton, who was part of our in-house design team until her recent move to London, took out the Young Designer Award. Her portfolio of Random House books—including The Great Wrong War — is really impressive. Pieta continues to work for us freelance.”

The PANZ Book Design Awards acknowledge excellence in the categories of typography, cover design, and illustrated, non-illustrated, educational and children’s books.
