SOAR: Mapua Literary Festival 2010

Mapua Community Library is independent, totally run by volunteers and the community is rightly proud of this facility. It is reliant on fundraising, grants and donations for its existence.

Mapua's first Literary Festival will be held on March 26, 27 and 28 of this year.

Saturday 27 March

10am to 4pm
Venue: Mapua Community Hall
Cost: $2 for adults, children free
Session: For The Love Of Books

A full day of lots of events with the children particularly in mind: -

Melanie Drewery will be speaking and reading from her stories, talking to children and doing book signings. Melanie Drewery (Ngati Mahanga) lives in Nelson, where she works as a writer, potter, and painter. She also runs a small farm with horses, sheep, and lots of other pets, as well a raising a big rowdy family. Melanie has published ten books, with more on the way. All of her books have a strong Maori feel, with the inclusion of Te Reo and tikanga Maori; introducing Maori language and aspects of Maori culture.

Sit back and relax, enjoy a traditional high tea whilst being entertained with tales and anecdotes from Fiona Farrell, Barry Southam, Brigid Lowry and Gerard Hindmarsh.

Fiona Farrell was born in Oamaru and educated in Otago and Toronto. To date she has published three books of poetry, two collections of short stories and five other novels. Her novel The Skinny Louie Book won the New Zealand Book Award for Fiction in 1992, and two others were shortlisted for the Montana Book Awards and she has won many other prizes, including the Bruce Mason Award for Playwrights and the Katherine Mansfield Fellowship in Menton. Fiona will talk about herself, her life as a writer and her books.
